My journey to the university

Hello, my name is Sebastian. Since childhood, I have been inquisitive about the relationships between the UK and other countries. I am passionate about giving back to my country and have applied for a degree in international relations to achieve that. My goal is to work with the government, particularly in the security sector, to learn more about the threats that can impact the UK and its relationships with other countries, both within and outside Europe.

I am fascinated by the origins of the British government and how it has evolved over time, shaping politics and relationships between different countries. My interest in international relations was sparked by reading history books, which taught me how it can impact countries in various ways, such as through NATO or the European Union.

During my studies in Sociology, I honed my teamwork skills by engaging in debates on topics such as crime and deviance. This experience allowed me to appreciate the perspectives of left and right realists on societal crime. In addition, I enhanced my essay writing skills by using various theories to analyse and evaluate sociological concepts.

I realized the close relationship between international relations and sociology due to the global prevalence of crime. The classification of crimes varies across societies and affects the entire country, leading me to explore how different countries fight against this sociological issue and its impact on society.

My proficiency in Italian as a second language has allowed me to comprehend diverse topics ranging from immigration to international relations. As Italy shifted from being a country of immigrants to becoming an immigrant-welcoming country, I have gained insights into the country’s immigration policies. Additionally, I regularly practice translating Italian into English and vice versa, which has deepened my appreciation for Italy’s rich history and its relationship with the United States.

In Spanish, I can confidently discuss current events in Spain, including politics and history. Engaging with students from diverse Spanish-speaking backgrounds has provided me with a better understanding of their cultures and histories, which will be invaluable in my future career as an international relations professional. Studying these two languages has allowed me to appreciate the richness of diverse cultures and histories, enabling me to navigate relationships between different cultures effectively in my future endeavours.

I enjoy reading about current and historical international events, such as the Cold War and World War I, and global politics, such as the rise of the right-wing in parts of Latin America. This helps me stay on top of international events and sparks my curiosity to understand how such events may come about. I am motivated to study international relations because it will support me in achieving my career goal and give me a better understanding of the globalised world, we live in.
