Student Voices and System Change: Reflections from the DEN International Student Conference 2026

Attending the Ninth Annual DEN International Student Conference at the University of Westminster was an inspiring and meaningful experience that reminded me of the importance of student voices in shaping conversations around sustainability, education, artificial intelligence, inequality, and global change. The conference brought together students, academics, and researchers from different countries and disciplines, creating a powerful environment for dialogue, collaboration, and learning.

As a BA (Hons) Economics and Management graduate from the University of Westminster, I had the privilege of presenting my topic,” Empowering the Global Student Voice: A SMART Framework for Sustainability & AI”. My presentation explored how students can move beyond being passive learners to becoming active contributors to societal transformation through sustainability, digital literacy, collaboration, and inclusive education.

One of the most valuable aspects of the conference was hearing students discuss global challenges from diverse cultural and personal perspectives. Topics surrounding migration, democratic education, artificial intelligence, inequality, and sustainability highlighted how interconnected today’s world has become. The discussions reinforced the idea that education should not only provide academic knowledge but should also empower students to think critically, question systems, and actively contribute to positive social change.

I was particularly inspired by the conversations around sustainability and the environmental impact of technology and AI. These discussions connected strongly with my own interests in sustainable development and inclusive growth. They also reminded me that meaningful solutions require collaboration across borders, disciplines, and communities. No single perspective can fully address the challenges facing our world today.

Presenting at the conference also strengthened my confidence as a speaker and researcher. Sharing my ideas in an international academic setting encouraged me to reflect on the role young people play in influencing the future. It reminded me that students and graduates already possess the creativity, insight, and ability to contribute meaningfully to society through research, innovation, and community engagement.

I would also like to sincerely thank Dr Farhang Morady and the University of Westminster for creating and supporting platforms like DEN that encourage student participation, global engagement, and inclusive dialogue. Their commitment to empowering student voices made this experience both memorable and impactful for many of us.

The DEN International Student Conference was not simply an academic event; it was a reminder that education has the power to connect people, inspire action, and shape a more sustainable and inclusive future for all.
