Reflection on Education, Sustainability, and Global Engagement

As part of the DEN International Student Conference, students from Westminster International University in Tashkent share their experiences, perspectives, and expectations as they prepare to engage with peers in London. In this short profile, Sarvarbek Ramatov, a Commercial Law student at WIUT, introduces his academic journey, reflects on his experiences, and shares his expectations ahead of his visit to London.

 About Me

My name is Sarvarbek Ramatov, and I am a fourth-year Commercial Law student at Westminster International University in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. I also served as a Student Ambassador and actively participate in academic and leadership initiatives focused on law, diplomacy, and international cooperation.

I have not yet had the opportunity to visit UK, which makes this upcoming experience especially meaningful for me. It represents both an academic and personal milestone.

In Uzbekistan, particularly in my home region of Khorezm, there are still challenges related to unequal access to quality education, regional economic disparities, and environmental concerns. These issues have shaped my perspective and motivated me to actively seek opportunities for growth and contribution, both locally and internationally.

My Experience of Education

My learning experience at WIUT has been dynamic, challenging, and highly engaging. The university emphasizes critical thinking, independent research, and the practical application of knowledge. As a Course Representative and a participant in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, I have developed strong analytical, communication, and advocacy skills.

Students at WIUT are encouraged to actively participate in discussions, express their views, and engage with real-world issues. This is reflected through research conferences, academic competitions, and leadership opportunities. I have personally benefited from this environment by presenting research, mentoring students, and contributing to academic initiatives.

I would describe myself as adaptable, motivated, and curious. I enjoy working in diverse teams and engaging in cross-cultural communication, which I have developed through experiences such as participating in international programs and working with global stakeholders during major events.

Expectations

I see London as a global city that brings together diverse cultures, ideas, and innovations. I expect it to be an environment where meaningful discussions and intellectual exchange naturally take place.

From the University of Westminster, I expect a strong academic atmosphere that encourages openness, inclusivity, and critical engagement. I am particularly interested in experiencing how teaching and learning are approached in an international context.

The Democratic Education Network (DEN) represents a unique opportunity to connect with students from different backgrounds and explore how education can be transformed to address

global challenges, especially in relation to sustainability and the growing role of artificial intelligence.

What excites me most is the opportunity to exchange perspectives. I am especially curious to learn how students in the UK approach issues such as educational innovation, inclusivity, and real-world impact.

My Contribution

At the conference, I would like to contribute my perspective as a student from a developing country who is actively working to bridge local challenges with global opportunities. I hope to share my experiences in legal education, student leadership, and international engagement.

I am particularly interested in discussing topics such as the role of education in sustainable development, the impact of AI on learning, and the importance of youth participation in decision-making processes. I would also be glad to contribute to presentations, group discussions, and collaborative projects.

Questions for DEN Students

If possible, I would love the opportunity to explore places outside London to gain a broader understanding of the UK. Within London, I am especially interested in visiting historical landmarks, academic institutions, and culturally diverse areas of the city.

Before my arrival, I would like to ask:

How do you see students contributing to meaningful change in society?

Final Thoughts

I have a strong interest in the UK education system and how it supports critical thinking and innovation. I am also passionate about the Sustainable Development Goals, especially in the context of education. Recently, I wrote a research paper comparing the education systems of the UK and Uzbekistan, which allowed me to explore these ideas in theory. Being able to now experience and discuss them in a real setting through the Democratic Education Network Conference feels both exciting and meaningful. I am looking forward to engaging with students, exchanging perspectives, and seeing how these ideas work in practice.
