Meeting Across Borders: A WIUT Student’s Reflection

As part of the DEN International Student Conference, students from Westminster International University in Tashkent share their experiences, perspectives, and expectations as they prepare to engage with peers in London. In this short profile, Mekhrangiz Khoshimova, a Business Management student at WIUT, introduces herself, reflects on her studies, and shares her aspirations ahead of her visit to London.

 About Me

My name is Mekhrangiz Khoshimova, a sophomore at Westminster International University in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, majoring in Business Management, on a fully funded government scholarship.

As an enthusiastic individual about youth advocacy, contributing to my community’s development as well as global movement, I have participated and lead a number of global conferences, forums and worked on projects that have a real impact. This allows me to link academic knowledge with real-life challenges, also making the conference a perfect opportunity for me to grow both professionally and personally by engaging with a wide range of perspectives.

International Experience

I have not had the chance to visit Europe’s countries, which makes this experience more meaningful to me. Yet, outside Uzbekistan, I had the perfect opportunity to participate in World Youth Festival in Russian in September 2025, where I connected with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds. This experience proved that people can find common ground when discussing global issues, regardless of their academic or social backgrounds.

Personal Perspective & Growth

Growing up and studying in different regions of Uzbekistan has changed how I perceive both the opportunities and the problems that exist in developing societies. It also made me realize how important it is to not only share your own ideas but also listen to what others have to say. This is one of the reasons I’m really looking forward to the DEN Conference. I want to build on that experience in a setting that is more focused on academics and discussion.

Challenges in My Community

One of the challenges in my community is the gap between education and employability. Many students finish school with mainly theoretical knowledge but have a hard time finding practical ways to get into the job market or seeking assistance. At the same time, environmental problems and a lack of knowledge about how to live sustainably are becoming more and more crucial, especially in cities as Tashkent. These are problems that I have worked on through my research and academic studies.

My Experience of Education

My experience at university has been challenging and life-changing for me. Students at Westminster International University in Tashkent are encouraged to think critically, question ideas, and talk about them instead of just taking in information. I am also involved in university life in addition to my studies. I am the leader of the Vocal Club at my university, the team leader of the 180 Degrees Consulting Club, and an advisor for the Student’s Union Educational Welfare Team and the 70 Plus community.

Extracurricular Activities & Personal Qualities

In addition to my academics, I’ve been involved in many extracurricular activities, such as volunteering, debating, and attending Model United Nations conferences. These activities have had a big impact on who I am. I learned how to think strategically, speak under pressure, and represent points of view other than my own through MUNs. I would say that I am someone who seems reserved at first but becomes very involved once I feel at ease in a situation. I value deep conversations over shallow ones, which is why I’m very excited about the discussions that this conference will offer.

Expectations

For me, London stands for variety, opportunity, and a link to the rest of the world. I’m interested to see how this diversity affects daily life, especially in places like the University of Westminster, which brings together students from all over the world. I am especially interested in talking about sustainable development from a local to global point of view, especially how small actions, such as raising awareness and promoting biodegradable materials, can lead to bigger changes.

What I Am Most Excited About

What I’m most looking forward to is meeting new people. I’m interested in the stories of each participant. I think knowing these personal aspects is what makes working together on a global scale real rather than just theoretical.

Exploring London

Lastly, I would love to see more of London beyond the university, especially places that showcase its diversity and rich history. I would also be interested in visiting places outside London, such as Oxford, as well as iconic places in London known for their culture and beauty. We would be honoured to have the opportunity.

Final Reflection

This conference, for me, is not just an academic opportunity; it is a chance to grow, to listen, and to contribute to conversations that matter on a global scale.
