In December, I had the privilege of travelling to Thailand with students from Westminster University. I wrote a previous blog describing how excited I was to experience every small aspect of this trip, and it certainly taught me things that will make me a better person. This journey marked the beginning of many personal reflections.
While I know I can’t speak for all my classmates, we all agreed that it was super fun. My main curiosity centred on the food and the cultural background of Thailand. During one of our lunches next to a river, I had the chance to talk to the students who were guiding us through Ayutthaya, and we shared stories about cultural superstitions. I noticed that, instead of chopsticks, they use a fork and spoon to eat, which surprised me at first, as I expected utensils like those in other Asian countries. Slowly, I got used to it. Their rice also varies, and it’s a staple part of each meal, often combined with vegetables and seafood. Learning to use a different set of utensils was a new skill for me.
However, I was unprepared for spice they use. As I am not accustomed to spicy food and don’t tend to use chilli when cooking, I struggled to adjust. However, the staff were attentive and prepared a table without spice for me and a few others. This made me feel happy and cared for. Looking back, these moments highlighted how trying new things builds connections, and I now feel obligated to increase my spice tolerance before my next trip to Thailand, so I can experience even more.
Thailand’s vibrant chaos felt like home. The bustling streets, the sticky heat, even the stray dogs, all mirrored Brazil, stirring a deep homesickness for my father and my country. In that warm familiarity, I barely noticed any discomfort of being away from the UK alone for the first time.
During our trip, we attended a lecture with Kasetsart University students about their culture and history. The discussion was part of our course on international democratic engagement. One student was asked if she felt her personal voice could make a difference. Her uncertain answer, shared in that academic setting, became a mirror for my own assumptions. It made me think deeply and recognise my own privilege: the fact that I can freely express my opinions online, in the media, or in public, and expect to be heard.
This experience clarified the power of speech, the impact of sharing a viewpoint and the responsibility of using that right wisely. It’s the freedom of expression, in thought, word, and action.
Going through this, I saw the real weight and reach my freedom carries. More than just a personal right, I now see it as an opportunity. I want to use my voice to speak for those who cannot safely express their own.
To conclude, I would like to clarify a few key points. My experience was limited to just one week, far too short to fully understand the complexities of life in Thailand. My reflection on democracy and voice came from a specific moment of learning, not from a judgment of their society. It was an insight into my own privileges, not a suggestion that my way of life should be imposed on others. There are always two sides to every story, and as a student, I know I have much more to learn.
Over the years, I will continue to grow in my understanding of these important topics and develop my own informed opinions. What remains certain is that Thailand gave me beautiful and wonderful moments that still bring a smile to my face. For that, and for the lessons learned, I am deeply grateful.
