The past two weeks have been an exhilarating deep dive into the heart of Vietnam, a country rich in history, vibrant culture, and a rapidly evolving education system. These sessions have provided a solid foundation as we prepare for our upcoming field trip, offering insights into the nation’s resilience, progress, and commitment to sustainability.
A Nation of Resilience and Transformation
Vietnam’s story is one of extraordinary resilience and transformation. Home to nearly 100 million people and boasting over 3,000 kilometres of breathtaking coastline, it seamlessly blends ancient traditions with modern aspirations. Its cultural heritage, deeply rooted in Confucian philosophies, has been shaped by colonial struggles and the scars of war, showcasing the strength and adaptability of its people.
Today, Vietnam is a rising star in the global economy, propelled by the pivotal “Doi Moi” reforms of 1986. These economic reforms transitioned the nation from state control to a market-oriented model, attracting global giants like Samsung and Toyota. Despite challenges such as pollution and rapid urbanisation, Vietnam actively pursues sustainable solutions, underscoring its commitment to a greener and more inclusive future.
Education: The Bridge Between Tradition and Modernity
Vietnam’s education system is a testament to its drive for progress while honouring its traditions. Since the Doi Moi reforms, higher education has undergone a remarkable transformation, expanding to over 240 institutions. Universities have adapted to meet the demands of a modern economy, emphasising practical skills and innovation.
One striking feature is the accessibility of education in Vietnam. With low tuition fees at public universities, higher education is within reach for many, while international collaborations have introduced global perspectives and enhanced academic standards. Hanoi University (HANU) stands out as a beacon of this progress, renowned for its foreign language programs and English-taught degrees. As a melting pot for local and international students, HANU exemplifies Vietnam’s dedication to fostering global connections while preserving its cultural identity.
Collaborating on Water Scarcity: A Student-Centered Perspective
Among the challenges facing Vietnam, water scarcity stands out as a critical issue, particularly in Hanoi. In preparation for our field trip, I am collaborating with Moaiad on a presentation that examines how water scarcity impacts students in the city. Our research has revealed an anticipated 5-10% increase in the demand for clean water in the coming year, highlighting the urgent need for improvements in water distribution systems.
This student-centric approach adds relevance to our research and sheds light on the broader implications of sustainability challenges in urban areas. We are eager to explore this topic further during our field trip, as it aligns with Vietnam’s efforts to address pressing environmental concerns.
Anticipation and Reflection
These sessions have been a refreshing departure from traditional lectures, offering an immersive and interactive exploration of Vietnam’s dynamic landscape. They have enriched my understanding of the country’s history, education system, and sustainability efforts, fueling my excitement for the journey ahead.
As the field trip draws near, I look forward to stepping beyond the classroom to experience Vietnam firsthand. From its historical landmarks to its innovative solutions for modern challenges, this promises to be a journey of discovery, growth, and inspiration. I am excited to share more insights as this adventure unfolds, highlighting Vietnam’s incredible journey of resilience and progress.
