A Midnight Reflection: My Journey to Istanbul

It’s midnight as I write this, just hours after returning from one of the most enriching experiences of my life—a field trip to Istanbul. As I sit here reflecting on my journey, I feel excited to share my story. I hope this inspires future students to embark on similar adventures and experience the wonders of one of the most unique cities in the world.

A City of Patriotism and Unity

The moment I stepped out of the metro station at Kadıköy, I was struck by the overwhelming patriotism of Istanbul. Turkish flags adorned every corner, a powerful reminder of Turkey’s independence and unity, achieved with the republic’s foundation in 1923 under Atatürk’s presidency. Atatürk’s portrait, another omnipresent symbol, underscored this sense of national pride and the transformation of Turkey into a developing nation.

Our first evening was spent at the renowned Çiya Sofrası and Kebap, founded by chef Musa Dağdeviren. His story is as inspiring as his food. Born out of personal struggles and political activism, Dağdeviren moved to Istanbul and created a space that celebrates Turkey’s rich culinary heritage. Drawing recipes from 40 villages and his mother’s own cooking, he established a restaurant that preserves the traditions of Turkish cuisine in a city that bridges countless cultures.

Exploring the Layers of Istanbul

The next day, we began exploring Kadıköy, situated on the Asian side of Istanbul. We visited a synagogue, a church, and a mosque, witnessing the coexistence of diverse faiths in this vibrant district. Later, we boarded a ferry to the European side of the city. The atmosphere grew busier as we walked through narrow streets filled with the aroma of spices, the chatter of locals and tourists, and the sight of magnificent mosques towering over the skyline.

Our guide led us through iconic landmarks such as the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the train station of the Orient Express, and the Grand Bazaar. Each site told a story of Istanbul’s rich history and cultural fusion. That evening, I ended the day in the company of Farhang, classmates, and two Thai students from Bangkok’s Kasetsart University. Over Turkish tea and desserts, we shared stories and conversations, cherishing the chance to connect with a diverse group of people.

A Day of Learning and Collaboration

Our third day was spent at a cosy bookshop, where we attended a conference featuring five talks by academics from Turkey and Thailand. Topics ranged from historical narratives and populism in Turkey to Thai-Middle Eastern relations and women in the labour force. The open-mic discussion and Q&A session allowed us, as undergraduate students, to engage with experts in political science.

I particularly appreciated learning about Thailand’s “Eastern” perspective on its relationship with the Middle East—a perspective often overshadowed by Western-centric narratives in the classroom. The day concluded with a gala dinner, where I connected with academics personally. Sharing laughter, food, and stories with individuals who have dedicated their lives to research was both humbling and inspiring.

A Day of Freedom

Our final day was a free day, and I spent it with a few classmates exploring Istanbul at our own pace. We ventured into the historic Hagia Sophia mosque, shared mezze dishes, and shopped in the Egyptian Bazaar. Speaking with locals, I heard stories of family businesses, opinions on Turkey’s economy, and glimpses into their daily lives. These conversations gave me a deeper appreciation for the people who bring life to this incredible city.

Reflections on Learning

As I sit here at home, reflecting on my experiences, I realise how much I learned without even knowing it at the time. Every step I took, a conversation I had, and the meal I shared was part of a grand learning experience. From exploring Istanbul’s historical and cultural layers to engaging with diverse perspectives at the conference, I gained insights that extend far beyond the classroom.

These experiences shape us, open our minds and deepen our understanding of the world. I am incredibly grateful to have been part of this field trip, and I hope that by sharing my story, others will be inspired to seize similar opportunities. Istanbul has left an indelible mark on me, and I carry its lessons with me as I move forward.
