Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, uniquely bridging Europe and Asia. With its rich history from the Roman and Ottoman empires, it attracts many tourists every day. My upcoming trip to Istanbul will enhance my studies of politics and development in the Middle East, providing me with first-hand experience of its political, economic, and social landscapes. This experience will help me gain a deeper understanding of how Istanbul’s historical significance continues to shape the cultural, economic, and political aspects that influence regional and international affairs.
Istanbul’s rich history will offer various perspectives on the historical roots of its political and social structures. Our field trip will take us to architectural and cultural landmarks such as the Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, and the Blue Mosque. Visiting these sites will deepen my understanding of how political history has shaped development and impacted decisions regarding cultural places. For example, Hagia Sophia has undergone many transformations: from a Byzantine church to a mosque, then to a museum, and back to a mosque.
In addition to experiencing these historical landmarks, I look forward to witnessing Istanbul’s vibrant modern city, where culture and tradition coexist. The city exemplifies urbanization, population growth, and economic expansion, linking to development theories in the Middle East, particularly as Istanbul is recognized as a rapidly growing area.
Furthermore, our trip includes attending workshops at Kirklareli University. The theories we have studied, such as religion and neoliberalism, will be expanded upon by lecturers familiar with Turkey’s academic, political, and cultural dynamics. This insight will help me develop a deeper understanding of how these factors have contributed to development within the country and their impact on the region as a whole.
Overall, this trip to Istanbul will provide a unique opportunity to explore the city’s diverse political, cultural, and historical landscapes. I will gain personal knowledge of how Istanbul’s past and present have positioned it in regional and international politics through discussions at Kirklareli University. This experience will significantly enhance my studies of the rapidly evolving political, economic, and social dynamics in the region.
