DEN Conference: A Reflective blog

This month, I took part in the Summer School and honestly, it was one of the most rewarding weeks I’ve had in a while. A lot happened in just a few days, from commemorating Victory over Japan Day to showing international students around London and ending the week with the launch of DEN’s latest book at the 8th Annual Conference.

We started the week off with the VJ Day event, which gave me the chance to be part of something both reflective and meaningful. It wasn’t just about marking a historical moment it was about thinking critically about how we remember the past and who gets to be part of that conversation. I hadn’t expected to feel as moved as I did, but being part of the planning and seeing how people responded made me realise how powerful these moments can be when done right.

One of my favourite parts of the week, though, was getting to play tour guide for the international students. We covered a lot of ground Camden Market, Notting Hill, Piccadilly Circus, Big Ben, and Chinatown. Seeing London through fresh eyes reminded me how much beauty and energy the city has. We shared stories, took way too many pictures, and laughed a lot. It wasn’t just about showing them the sights it was about connecting, learning from each other, and having fun along the way.

The week finished up with the DEN 8th Annual Conference, which felt like the grand finale. It was a proud moment to see this year’s book launched especially knowing how much work went into it from so many people. The conference brought together a real mix of voices, and it felt good to be part of something that celebrates collaboration and curiosity.

Looking back, I’ve learnt a lot. I’ve grown more confident, picked up new skills, and gained a better understanding of what it really means to be involved in civic life. It’s not just about politics or formal spaces it’s also about small actions, community, and conversations that make people feel heard and included.

All in all, the DEN Summer School was a packed, slightly exhausting, but genuinely inspiring experience. I walked away with new friends, new insights, and a real sense of how important it is to stay engaged and open-minded.
