What is the source for this letter?

I ask because the letter is dated 15th August 1945, when Emperoro Hirohito issued his order for all Japanese forces to lay down their arms. It is the day we call VJ Day.

The event the author records in his first paragraph, the formal surrender, took place two weeks later, on 2nd September.

A little odd, don’t you think? How do we trust that the rest of the contents of the letter is real?

I agree… There were no US ships in Tokyo Bay on August 15, 1945. This is a wonderful piece of writing, but it appears to have been written in 2025 rather than 1945.

What a shame that this piece of thoughtful literature isn’t being honest about its source.
